Thought Provoking β€’ Inspirational β€’ Bittersweet

πŸ’¬ β€œThe creation of black wealth is an important but overlooked subject in the economic and social history of the United States. African Americans were treated as property during slavery and were stripped of their economic and social personhood-reduced to commodities to be controlled, managed, bought, sold, underwritten, and leveraged. Attaining economic independence and power was a revolutionary act.”

πŸ“š Black Fortunes: The Story of the First Six African Americans Who Survived Slavery and Became Millionaires
by Shomari Wills

❓What is your definition of a role model?
β €
πŸ’‘ For me, it’s individuals doing any measure of tikkun olam to inflict an immeasurable amount of change. The monetary side effects of becoming a millionaire in the process is simply icing on the cake.
β €
Summary: Black Fortunes profiles six formally enslaved Black pioneers trailblazing and navigating America’s racist landscape to surface momentarily victorious. This book documents their rise, scrutiny, tribulations, and roadblocks to generational wealth during the 1830s-1920s.

Some well known, and others new, the presented milillionares included:
πŸ’΅ an adventurer,
πŸ’΅ a landowner,
πŸ’΅ a self-taught chemist,
πŸ’΅ a millionaire’s mistress,
πŸ’΅ a schoolteacher,
πŸ’΅ and a flamboyant rebel.

❀️ Though non-fiction, this reads like a soap opera. Each storyline drew me in and satisfied my curiosity. It is a crime that all of these entrepreneurs  are not mentioned in the grade school history books. I would have found them worthy role models for the youth.

πŸ’” Some stories contain holes due to documentation not available during research. As a result, some stories will leave you wanting more.

Recommendations: Everyone (seriously, this information needs to be disseminated to the lowest level).
