πŸ’¬ β€œIt’s just too f*#%&$g much to always have to be angry and alert. To always have to be ready and willing to challenge whiteness. To always have a perfectly pithy tweet or a thousand-word screed ready in response to the next Trayvon Martin, the newest Sandra Bland, and the latest Eric Garner, and to feel all the same feelings again. And again. And again. I just wanted a f*#%&$g break.”

πŸ“š What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Blacker: A Memoir in Essays
by Damon Young
β €
❓What does it mean to be a Black man in America?
β €
πŸ’‘ There is no standard answer as every experience is different. And as a Black woman, I may never truly know.
β €
I must say the title of this book caught my attention and drew me in. It screams promises of Black boy joy and empowerment!
β €
Summary: What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Blacker is a memoir in a series of essays on racial slur war stories, defining blackness, sexuality, barbershop culture, basketball, toxic masculinity, friends of opposing politics, social pariahness, and fatherhood to name a few. If you aren’t familiar with Damon Young as a GQ columnist and editor of Very Smart Brothas and the Root, this book gives you a very up close and personal account.

🚧 Trigger Warnings:
* Get used to the N-word
* Toxic masculinity
* Possible insensitive language
* Plenty of cussing

❀️ I respected the rawness! The candor of the writing was so unflinching it felt like a text conversation with my male siblings. There were a few points of TMI, but those elicited belly clutching laughs. I laughed so hard that it literally hurt. Many of the essays are very relevant today and would launch some very important conversations.
β €
πŸ’” There was much controversy surrounding the author’s views on rape culture. While these are addressed and resolved in the book, I feel he still has some issues to work through regarding his perspective on the female experience in general.
β €
Recommendations: Fans of the author, especially male & Black readers.
