Inspiring and empowering poetry with a message! This novel is a comprehensive reflection on the political biases, social injustices, collective psyches, and historical crimes against the African American race in America. Each poem is though-provoking with a hypothetical mic drop punctuating the conclusion. The format of this book is unique: Spoken word poems coupled with essays outlining inspirations, current events, personal experiences, educational tidbits, and extended recommended readings. The selection voices stories ranging from law enforcement using lethal force on unarmed men, women, & children of color, to the flaws with rap culture, to a theoretical conversation between Malcolm X and Dr. Huey P. Newton. Listen up! Regardless of your level of wokeness, there is a chapter to resonate with everyone. There was a point in time when I used to say the oral art of spoken word was better “said” than “read”, yet this book forces me to reconsider. The accommodating verbiage to each stanza connects that previously missing element of intimacy through intonation, voice inflections, body language, and profile assumptions. Each reflection is so well developed and depicted that the essence of each poem is overwhelmingly impressive. Wow! The book created such a calmness; I could feel the years of tension slowly release, just knowing that a jewel such as this exists. I would recommend this title to young men and women of color, activists, history buffs, fans of African American literature, and if you read and loved the Autobiography of Malcolm X.
