Tonight, I start on my first quick buddy read of the year! I’m reading #onbeauty by Zadie Smith with @bookswithmeg_ !⁣

I’ve literally just turned the last page on #kindred ! The concept of rewriting history is the driving force of man’s fascination with time travel. The whole paradox of butterfly wings altering universes or if the worlds are in fact the way they are because of this derailed insect is the source of endless debate. I, at least speak for myself in this generalization. I used to entertain the concept of my modern day education combined with knowledge of the antebellum South, would make me impervious to slavery and β€œif that was me” scenarios. Yet after reading Kindred, I am forced to question that theory and those possibilities. And in turn am able to sympathize with my ancestors’ struggle on a level I never realized was possible. Kindred is the story of a modern day black woman mysteriously & repeatedly transported to a plantation in 1815 to save a white boy. Dana’s travels to the past, even with her knowledge and resilience, makes me swallow my pride, mute any rebuttal, and simply listen (Or in this case, read on). I stopped many times as the unpredictability brought upon trepidation to keep turning he pages. It depicts not only the violence but more-so the psychological yielding to the concept of acceptance and the mind frame of the times. This is definitely a classic and the amount of research to make the story visceral is undeniable! I recommend this to readers of African American Lit, science fiction, thrillers, and horror.⁣⁣⁣
